New Business Models and Services

New Business Models and Services (aka NBM) is a new start-up organization for Airbus and is focused on creating new business from digitally-enhanced business models and services.  The NBM organization is an integral part of the Airbus Digital Transformation Initiative with responsibility to create the new disruptive business models across Airbus in America, including Airbus Americas; Airbus Defense and Space, Inc., and Airbus Helicopters, Inc.    

The position of Digital Innovation Executive, NBM, will report directly to the VP & Head of New Business Models and Services. The main purpose of the role is to enable the broader Airbus organization to ideate and incubate new business models with state-of-the-art methodologies and best possible support. 

The focus will be on four areas:

[1] Help the business leverage innovation methodologies, such as 'Design Thinking' and 'Lean Start-up', by defining a comprehensive approach and tool set that can be used by less experienced businesses, setting-up a network of coaches, and training the leadership team to conduct appropriate business model / 'shark tank' reviews. The Digital Innovation Executive will constantly advance these methodologies and provide ongoing coaching to new business model teams to increase their chances of success.

[2] Help build a network of external partners that can support with rapid and iterative business model build. These can include independent software developer networkers, user experience design agencies, crowd-sourced innovation, external coaches, etc.

[3] Help Airbus to define the best set-up for the larger number of incubators, accelerators and venture builders currently existing internally

[4] Help sharpen the role and governance for the New Business Models and Services organization


Primary Responsibilities 

  • Create a baseline of state-of-the-art innovation methods and how to apply them in Airbus' context
    • External best practices (e.g., Design thinking @ SAP, Fastworks@GE, BizMo@Siemens)
    • At Airbus (e.g., within Bizlab, A^3, Navblue)
  • Define an Airbus toolkit for 'customer-centric business model design'
    • Define approaches such as '100 day innovation sprints' that embed new methodologies
    • Define need for coaching resources to roll out tools and methods
    • Support through events, such as business model "hackathons"
  • Pilot and roll-out new methods and tools
    • Pilot in new business model development supported by this organization
    • Provide active coaching the new business model teams
    • Build network / hire other coaches
    • Develop a 'roadshow'
  • Develop partner network
    • Design partner taxonomy and potential firms
    • Understand existing references internally and externally
    • Find internal pilot partners, where not yet existing
    • Actively maintain and expand network
    • Actively support businesses in finding the best partner for their problem
  • Optimize set up of incubators, accelerators and venture builders at Airbus
    • Create transparency on the existing innovation set-ups across Airbus
    • Recommend where to streamline, sharpen mission, integrate governance
  • Define 'New Business Models and Services' own short- and long-term role in this set-up
  • Frequent 20-30% international and/or domestic travel per year. 


Skills and Experience:

    • 'Operator experience' setting up / working in incubator, accelerator, venture builder or significant own start-up experience
    • Well versed in applying Design Thinking and/or Lean Start-up methodologies
    • Strong project manager
    • Analytical, structured thinker
    • Marketing acumen to present methodologies in appealing fashion
    • Team player, collaborative working style
    • Strong communications skills at all levels of the organization
    • Language skills fluent English; French and/or German working level


Key success measures include:

  • Achievement of specific milestones (e.g. readiness and quality of methodology tool box, relevance and usage of partner network...)
  • Time to market KPIs
  • Successful commercialization of new products and services
  • 360 degree stakeholder feedback on role performance and coaching
